WAUKENGEN

Waukegan is the county seat of Lake County and is the ninth largest city in Illinois with a population of 91,452 people. It is the fifth largest city on the western shore of Lake Michigan, after Chicago, Milwaukee, Green Bay and Kenosha, Wisconsin. Waukegan is located about eight miles south of the border with Wisconsin and 40 miles north of Chicago. Waukegan is best known as the hometown of famous comedian Jack Benny.

Waukegan continues to experience growth, and as a result, has experienced the negative consequences of drug trafficking in the state.

Illinois has always been a center for drug traffickers because of its unique location. Chicago’s O’Hare Airport is the busiest airport in the country and this has made Illinois attractive to drug traffickers. Chicago has long had a problem with drug-related gang activity, and this has resulted in an increase in homicides, prostitution, money laundering and many other social and economic problems. Most of the cocaine supply in Illinois comes into Chicago in large amounts and the drug is then shipped to New York City and Philadelphia. Heroin continues to be a problem in Illinois because the drug is cheap, easily available and strong. Methamphetamine is also a problem in Illinois and is produced in laboratories around the state with stolen chemicals. Law enforcement continues to struggle with the proliferation of methamphetamine labs, especially in rural areas. Chicago is a big city and because of this fact, the city has a big problem with club drugs like ecstasy and GHB. As in every other state in the country, prescription drug addiction continues to grow at an alarming rate, creating social, economic and criminal problems for Illinois residents.
